CyberKnife SBRT

Laser-Edge Treatment for Prostate Cancer

CyberKnife® is an incision-free, robotic procedure for men who require radiation treatment for prostate cancer. The Urology Group is the region's leading provider.

Overview

No one expects to hear the words “you have cancer” or to be faced with finding the best treatment path. The nationally recognized experts at The Urology Group can help. We’re one of the largest, most experienced groups of physicians caring for patients with prostate and kidney cancer in the United States. And we are the region’s leading provider of CyberKnife SBRT for treatment of these two conditions.

CyberKnife stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) is an incision-free, robotic procedure that delivers high doses of radiation with extreme accuracy, for fewer treatments. It is one of the most advanced treatments available for prostate and kidney cancer.

How CyberKnife SBRT Works

Despite its name, CyberKnife involves no cutting and offers a non-invasive alternative to surgery for many patients. Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) involves high doses of radiation delivered in a small number of treatment sessions. This is what you can expect:

  • Before treatment, small metallic markers are placed in the prostate or kidney (depending on the cancer type) so the CyberKnife robot can accurately monitor the cancer’s location at all times. For prostate cancer, the markers are inserted during a procedure similar to a prostate biopsy, through the rectum. For kidney cancer, the markers are placed through the upper abdomen in a procedure called interventional radiology.
  • About a week after the marker placement, both a CT scan and an MRI are taken. The images are merged using specialized software to provide a clear picture of the cancerous region, including healthy surrounding tissue, from which the physicians create a treatment plan.
  • A robotic arm delivers pencil-thin beams of radiation that can be directed from potentially thousands of angles, allowing a high dose to bombard cancerous cells with great accuracy and minimizing exposure to healthy neighboring tissues. Because the technology can detect motion during treatment, the CyberKnife robot continuously corrects the aim of the radiation beam, further ensuring accuracy.
  • Each session will last less than one hour and is painless. No urinary catheter is necessary. On treatment days, patients are typically asked to perform an enema prior to the session.

Is CyberKnife SBRT for You?

Selecting a treatment for your cancer is a personal decision. When making that decision, it is important to understand:

  • The nature of your diagnosis.
  • Available treatment options.
  • Benefits, risks, and side effects of each treatment option.

You may want to discuss your diagnosis and treatment plan with family and friends, and read the stories of other patients (see link above) who had the same diagnosis.

Why CyberKnife SBRT?

If you have prostate or kidney cancer and radiation treatment is recommended, CyberKnife may be an ideal option.

Key benefits include:

  • Despite its name, CyberKnife requires no cutting.
  • Fewer treatments – typically five sessions compared with 40 or more for traditional radiation.
  • It can be completed in one week, not months.
  • It delivers high doses of radiation with pinpoint accuracy, meaning minimum effect to the rest of the body.
  • It enables a shorter recovery time.

The Urology Group offers one of the most advanced independent centers of excellence for urologic care in the country. This singular focus means our team of physicians and staff is specialized to deliver the best possible treatment for prostate and kidney cancer patients.
