Genetic Testing and Prostate Cancer: Know the Connection

If you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer, there are five good reasons to consider genetic testing. Results of this simple blood test will help you:

  1. Understand your personal risk for other cancers.
  2. Determine which prostate cancer treatments may be most effective (some treatments specifically target cancer with genetic mutations).
  3. Provide your family members with valuable information about their own possible cancer risk.
  4. Identify if your prostate cancer is aggressive, and if yes, which treatment is best.
  5. Gain peace of mind. Results may confirm that no known mutations exist, or it may provide a clearer treatment plan if a mutation is found.

Learn more about genetic testing, available at The Urology Group, including who should consider genetic testing and what the results mean.

Ask your urologist if genetic testing is right for you, especially if you’ve been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Bladder Cancer: What Everyone Should Know

The fourth most common cancer in U.S. men (less common in women), when it comes to the most serious cancers, bladder cancer often slides under the radar. But it shouldn’t. That’s why staff at The Urology Group came out in full force to support the Walk to End Bladder Cancer on May 9, raising awareness and crucial funding for education programs and research initiatives.

Although bladder cancer may exist without any obvious signs, when symptoms do occur they are:

  • Blood in the urine
  • Urgent need to urinate
  • Urinating more than every two hours
  • Painful urination

Treatment depends on the severity, and like most cancers, the sooner the diagnosis, the better the outcome. You can learn more about bladder cancer from patients who have successfully been treated. Read Carol’s story to learn more.

The Truths and Misconceptions About Vasectomies

Are you certain you don’t want more children? If so, a vasectomy can provide you peace of mind. Each year more than 500,000 U.S. men decide to have this simple outpatient procedure as a permanent form of birth control. Many more men are on the fence about it, fearful of things they “think” might happen after the 15-30 minute procedure.

If you’re hesitant based on things you’ve heard, check-out the blog Truths and Misconceptions: What Every Man Should Know About A Vasectomy. During our 30 years of practice, physicians at The Urology Group have fielded loads of questions from men with vasectomy fears. The blog linked here debunks the top five.

If you have fears about a vasectomy, we are eager to eliminate them by helping you understand exactly what the procedure involves. A thorough consultation with your physician from The Urology Group will help you overcome your fears.
