Premature Ejaculation

Premature Ejaculation

Premature ejaculation is uncontrolled ejaculation either before or shortly after sexual penetration, and before the person wishes. By definition, premature ejaculation occurs within one minute of sexual activity or intercourse. Premature ejaculation is one of the most common forms of male sexual dysfunction and has probably affected every man at some point in his life.

There are several causes for premature ejaculation, both emotional and physical. It may occur with a new partner, in specific sexual situations or if it has been a long time since the last ejaculation. Psychological factors such as anxiety, guilt or depression also may contribute. In some cases, premature ejaculation may be related to an underlying medical issue such as hormonal problems, injury or medicinal side effects.

The primary symptom is an uncontrolled and undesired ejaculation, with minimal sexual stimulation.

Your physician will conduct a thorough physical exam and discuss your medical and sexual history with you and, possibly, your partner. Your semen, urine and blood may also be tested to rule out more serious medical problems.

The Urology Group has helped thousands of men overcome premature ejaculation. Treatments include behavioral counseling and medication:

  • Behavioral changes: Relaxation or distraction exercises can help delay ejaculation. Cutting down on alcohol, tobacco or drug use also can help. Counseling or behavioral therapy may also be advised.
  • Medication: Certain antidepressants may be used to treat premature ejaculation, because these medications inhibit orgasm as a side effect. But because they are not being used to ease depression, the use of antidepressants to treat premature ejaculation is considered an "off-label" use.
